Shanghai
09:00

French Concession deep-dive — art, temples & alleyways
Shanghai
09:00
Tianzifang (田子坊)
Go before 10am to wander the arty alleys in peace. Maze of shikumen converted into indie boutiques, coffee shops, and studios. Gets very crowded by 11am. Buy something small — the local designers are genuinely good.
🚇 Metro L4 → Middle Huaihai Rd, then bus or walk ~20 min south
13:00
Power Station of Art (当代艺术博物馆)
A 165m chimney, a converted 1897 power plant, now China's largest contemporary art museum. Check their current exhibition before going — it varies wildly in quality. Free entry. The building itself is worth it regardless.

The Forbidden City, then Jingshan for the golden rooftop view
Beijing
08:30
Forbidden City (故宫博物院)
Book weeks ahead on the Palace Museum official site — it sells out, especially Saturdays. 80,000 tickets/day, timed entry. Passport required at the gate. Enter from the south (Meridian Gate / 午门), exit north (Shenwu Gate). Allow 3–4 hours minimum. Wear warm layers — the courtyards are exposed and freezing.
🚶 Exit north gate, cross the road — Jingshan is immediately opposite
13:00
Jingshan Park (景山公园)
Artificial hill built from the excavated soil of the Forbidden City moat. Climb to Wanchun Pavilion at the summit — the view straight down the palace's golden rooftops is the best photo in Beijing. Go before 14:30 while the sun is still facing south. ~¥2 entry.

The Great Wall — Mutianyu, cable car up, toboggan down
Beijing
07:30
Depart for Mutianyu (慕田峪)
~1.5 hr from central Beijing. Best option: hire a driver for the day (~¥500 round trip, negotiate via hotel) or join a morning tour. Public bus is possible (Bus 867 from Dongzhimen) but slower. Leave early — it's a full day.
🚗 ~1.5 hrs · arrive at Mutianyu base by 09:00–09:30
09:30
Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城)
Best-restored, least-crowded major section. Take the cable car up (¥100 return). Walk the wall east — towers 14–20 are the most dramatic in winter. Coming down: the toboggan (luge) run is ¥100 and genuinely fun. DRESS IN SERIOUS LAYERS — it's exposed, windswept, and will be several degrees colder than Beijing city. Bring gloves and a hat.
🚗 Toboggan down → lunch at base → driver back to Beijing · ~1.5 hrs
16:00
Back in Beijing — rest & recover
The wall is tiring, especially in the cold. Take the evening easy — a hot pot dinner is the perfect post-Wall recovery meal.

Temples, Lamas & Houhai hutongs at night
Beijing
09:00
Temple of Heaven (天坛)
Vast ritual park where emperors prayed for a good harvest. Mornings are best — locals do tai chi, fan dancing, and group singing in the outer park before 10am. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the iconic circular wooden structure. ~¥34 for the park + main hall. Allow 2 hours.
🚇 Metro L5 → Yonghegong (Lama Temple) · ~20 min
13:30
Lama Temple (雍和宫)
Beijing's most atmospheric active temple — Tibetan Buddhist, thick with incense smoke. Free incense sticks given at the gate. The Wanfu Pavilion houses an 18m Buddha carved from a single sandalwood trunk. Genuinely sacred space — dress respectfully, no shorts. ~¥25.
🚇 Metro L2 → Gulou Dajie, walk to Houhai lake · ~15 min
16:30
Houhai Lake & Hutongs (后海)
Lake ringed by hutong alleyways and bars. Hire a pedicab (rickshaw) for a 45-min hutong tour — negotiate ¥100–150 for the circuit. The lake sometimes freezes in December and locals skate on it. Bar street along the south shore gets lively after dark.

Imperial lakeside retreat — 2.9km² of gardens, pavilions, and corridors. Kunming Lake often freezes over in December, allowing a silent, glassy walk across the ice. Enter from the East Gate. Walk the Long Corridor (728m of painted scenes), climb Longevity Hill for the view. ~¥30. Allow 3 hours.

Before you go

The handful of things that genuinely make or break a China trip right now.

📱

Set up payments first

Almost nothing takes cash or foreign cards. Install Alipay and WeChat Pay before you fly and link an international card inside the app — do this at home, it's fiddly on arrival.

🎟️

Book the big sights early

The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and major museums need advance online reservations tied to your passport. The Forbidden City in particular can sell out weeks ahead.

🛂

Passport = your ticket

Carry your physical passport everywhere — it's scanned to enter squares, museums, and to board trains. Check your visa / visa-free transit eligibility for your nationality before booking.

🚄

Shanghai → Beijing train

The high-speed G-train (~4.5 hrs, city-centre to city-centre) beats flying once you count airport time. Book via Trip.com or the 12306 app. 2nd class ~¥555. Book at least 2 weeks ahead.

🧥

Pack for real cold

Beijing in December runs well below freezing and dry; the Great Wall is bitterly exposed. Bring a proper coat, hat, thermal gloves, and base layers. Shanghai is milder but damp — a waterproof shell helps.

🌐

VPN + maps

Set up a VPN at home if you need Google, WhatsApp, or Instagram. For navigation use Amap (高德地图) — it's the local standard. For taxis use DiDi, both pay through Alipay.
